An extraordinary congress
of the Estonian Social Democratic Labor Party on 30 November
re-elected parliamentary deputy Tiit Toomsalu as the party's
chairman. The congress decided to participate in the March
parliamentary elections, but the party will determine in December if
one of its planks in the party platform will oppose Estonia's EU
membership.

The Estonian Social
Democratic Labor Party (ESDTP) said that Estonia is not ready to
join either the European Union or NATO. Party Secretary-General
Väino Põldes said that membership in NATO would be particularly
disastrous because it would boost the countries defense spending to
two percent of GDP at a time when the "social crisis is steadily
growing."
